Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's a Nintendo DS with a camera and MP3 player

If the Nikkei Business Daily report is anything to go by, the Nintendo DS is currently undergoing an exciting revamp and will be crossing over into the heavily crowded land of photos, music and portable gaming. Before you get overcome with excitement, it's due for a Christmas release... in Japan. Which most likely means a late launch some time next year for us over in Europe (surely we're used to being last in line by now?).

With no official name, or official pics, all we've got to get excited about is improved wireless functionality and plenty of music and photo taking action. This will make it a direct competitor of Sony's PSP, the iPhone and a range of other mobile devices out there offering similar features.

Don't let the bulky model in the pic put you off, it's just an artist's impression. Hopefully it'll sport a camera more akin to a laptop webcam or phone camera. The circulating rumours say the super DS (I've given it its own name for now) will cost around 20,000 Yen, so around £200, which is not bad at all. Not to be all cynical and stuff, but haven't we've already heard a DS rumour this year? So how believable is this one? Four words: only, time, will and tell.
