Google are all knowing as a search engine, and now they're entering the browser wars against the likes of Firefox and Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Today they're launching "a fresh take on the browser" in beta, currently just for PCs but with Mac and Linux support to follow.

Like Firefox, the browser will be open source, in the hope that developers will build plug-ins for it. And of course, being Google, there's an exceedingly long cartoon explaining the intricacies. You can check it out here.

Click on over for a list of the key features:

- Each tab will be kept in a separate 'sandbox', which means they all function autonomously. If one crashes, it won't crash the whole browser.

- You'll be able to access a browser Task Manager, and look at which tabs are using the most CPU and shut them accordingly.

- There's a new Javascript engine, V8, which promises to "power the next generation of web applications that aren't even possible in today's browsers". Show offs.

- More speed across the board.

- A clean and simple design, at least for those who don't want to get too involved in customising their browser.

Do web designers really need ANOTHER browser to check stuff in? If this thing isn't standards compliant I'm suggesting a boycott. However, if it's a efficient, acid test passing attempt to stick another knife in Internet Explorer, good on 'em!
