Nintendo works in mysterious ways, and not making the Wii play DVDs was one of the strangest of all the ways we've seen. Luckily, there's some clever hacker out there who has managed to get the Wii to play them, and it doesn't involve taking a hammer and chisel to the hardware itself.
Essentially, it's all about installing a fake game into the Wii, which you can then use to port over the hack from an SD card. Although it all sounds terribly complicated, if you're keen to get DVD playback, it's pretty much your only choice. You can read the full instructions here.
