The founder of job site Monster.com has launched another endeavour, entitled Tributes.com. It's like a Friends Reunited for deaths, as far as I can tell. It's an opportunity to steal away the obituaries from the deadwood newspapers, posting them online.
Information on deaths will be gleaned directly from funeral homes, and social security info (!) and you can sign up to various towns and neighbourhoods to get information on when one of your neighbours pops their clogs - very handy if you're on the lookout for real estate to buy up and expand on. You can also set up a guest book for people to sign, which can be archived for a fee.
It's an attempt to harness the buying power of the so called Baby Boomers, who are now entering their 60s and, well, dying. They're more au fait that the previous generation of 60 year olds, and they're not that interested in the real estate, auto and personals ("sports of the young" according to Monster.com founder Jeff Taylor).
Money will also be made by selling advertising space, online memorials and selling things like flowers and cards.
