7:50: And there you have it folks. Did you get what you came for? Who's up for a quick trip to the pub to celebrate?
It'll be in 22 countries by July 11th.
7:44: 3G iPhone will sell at $199 for the 8GB. $299 for 16GB. And there's colours! Or colour. There's a white one for 16GB.
6 countries are getting the 3G iPhone initially. People are clapping to 'It's a Small World After All'. Mexico and Canada are fine, most of South America is cool. At this point, only having the audio feed is kind of killing me. 60 more will be receiving it in the next 3 months. I believe Europe maybe on that list.
7:39: So, there's full GPS built in, 3G and better enterprise integration. There's now loads of third party apps, and a great way of distributing them. He's looking smug.
7:38: And GPS too? Why Steve, you're really spoiling us. Obviously, this is a massive deal bearing in mind all the location based stuff they were discussing earlier. There's a video of driving down Lombard Street in San Francisco. I was totally there a few days ago!! Steve - I feel so close to you right now.
The 3G is 2.8x faster. Apparently, the 3G speeds are approaching WiFi. The battery life is 300 standby, 2G talkime is 10 hours. 3G talktime is 5 hours - industry leading. Browsing - 5 to 6 hours. Video -7 hours. Audio 24 hours. That's not freakin' bad.
7:34: 59 seconds on EDGE
7:33: EDGE vs 3G download comparison video coming up. 23 seconds on 3G, vs....
It's beautiful. Same size screen. Full plastic back. Camera. Plush headphone jack (thank god). Dramatically improved audio. Thinner sides (I don't think that means thinner overall).
*queue Twitter crashing*
GOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
3G is the next challenge. Does that mean we get it? Today? Steve? Does it?
7:29: "It's the phone that changed phones". 99% customer satisfaction. 98% of users are browsing. 80% are using 10 or more features. That's some pretty impressive shit.
ONTO THE IPHONE. OH YES, BABY.
It'll be $99 a year, and you'll get 20GB of free storage. There will be a free trial available from July. MobileMe will replace .Mac. The addresses will be automatically upgraded.
7:21: The interface sounds very much like you'd find on iPhoto etc, with lots of scrolling through photos, dragging and dropping, and the photos also get replicated over the air according to what folder you're dragging them to. iDisk is also now online so you don't need to email files about. Thank god, because that REALLY sucks.
7:19: Pondering what I'd rather - me.com, pizza.com or news.com...
7:16: You'll get a Me.com log in page, which is supposed to be so smooth it looks like a desktop app.
So, if you get an email in your account, it will get pushed to all your devices and computers. If you change an address on your iPhone, it gets wirelessly updated on your Mac. I love how Apple are talking like they invented this concept.
7:09: Oooh. Something entirely new. We like entirely new. It's called Mobile Me. "It's like having Exchange for the rest of us". It means everyone will have push email, contacts and calendars.
iPhone 2.0 is going to be free for all iphone owners and $9.99 for Touch owners and it'll be available early July. The app store is going to be on every iPhone, and updates on the apps you've bought will be downloaded over the air and you'll be notified when they're available.
7:07: Best reaction so far today? Turn the calculator sideways and it turns into a scientific calculator! There's also parental controls, and the ability to save images from your emails into your images folder. There's also better language support. Mon deu!
7:05: Contacts will now be fully searchable, thank god. And there's going to be better document support. You've got word, excel and now powerpoint support.
7:04: Right. SDK news is pretty much over. Are we on one more thing yet?
7:02: Sorry folks. Brief outage whilst my laptop and I had what will probably prove to be the argument that broke the camel's back. The good news is, they're stil talking apps.
There are also going to be medical apps available, further hammering home the point that the iPhone is no longer just going to be toted by Wired-reading, black frame glasses-wearing peeps.
6:52: There's a sports app that does things like provide you with real-time info on who's on what base (I have no idea but I know they all belong to us) and scores, which I believe are important.
God, I should totally be on that stage. They love the English.
Oh thank god. The crowd love him as he played a bit of The Beatles demo-ing his music composing app.
6:45: Brilliant. They've got an English guy on stage. His USP? He's an insurance salesman. Way to represent.
6:38: Not really. They haven't announced the time traveling app yet, which will allow me to skip ahead to the launch of the app store, where the Typepad thingo will be free.
6:37: There's also an app for TypePad. See ya - I'm off to blog from the pub.
6:35: Social networking is obviously a perfect fit with location based services. Loopt will allow you to search for friends, find out if they're free for lunch, and then you'll be able to get directions to where they are. And it'll work with dinner. And breakfast. In fact, I suspect it'll work for more than just meals.
6:35: There's going to be a native eBay app, available free. Apparently, eBay is already one of the most popular destinations through the iPhone's Safari browser.
6:30: Some developers are on stage showing off their wares. Sega, with Super Monkey Ball. It's going to be available at the launch of the app story for $9.99.
6:25: Oooh, this is pretty cool. He's just created an app that filters only the contacts within 10 miles of where he is! Live on stage! Some people are truly magical.
Well, I for one get it. Building apps is easy. This is when you realise the true function of a developers conference....
Developers are going to get access to the same API as Apple uses, so they'll have access to the same tools. They're emphasising location based services as a big opportunity.
6:10: The iPhone 2.0 firmware has 3 new parts - new functions for the user, SDK and enterprise functionality. This last one includes better management of email, including (hooray!) Push email, remote wiping and global address books.
As you'd expect from something that is actually a fairly techy developer conference, there's lots of news on the tweaks they've made to satisfy enterprise customers with the iPhone firmware 2.0.
6:00: Steve's on stage, and he's hyped. There's been much cheering when he mentioned that Developers would get a look at the Snow Leopard OS after lunch, but it's not quite the news we're waiting for.
