Rhapsody vs iTunes: Let the battle of the iPod tunes commence

Well I never. It would appear iTunes has found itself some healthy competition in the form of digital music seller Rhapsody. The iTunes rival is launching a $50 million marketing campaign to provide tunage in MP3 format, meaning they'll be able to be played on the infamous Apple device. Rhapsody, which is better known for its subscription service for unlimited song streaming rather than focusing on downloads, has now decided to embrace the iPod rather than compete with it - either that or they've realised the potential revenue for providing individual MP3 formatted music.

iTunes had better watch its back. Not only is Rhapsody now providing songs online via partners such as Yahoo Inc and Verizon Wireless, but it will also be the music store back-end to MTVs music websites and iLike, the overly popular music application used on Facebook. The service, which has been described as "Music without limits", will also be available on mobiles via the Verizon Wireless VCAST Music service. Buying a song via your mobile also means you'll be able to download the same song to your computer as well.

Will Rhapsody finally break that iTunes market dominance? We'll keep our breath bated.
