Pomi the Penguin Robot: The start of Smellavision?

Humans love robots. Fact. we can see this by the plethora of films featuring robots ( I Robot/ Star Wars etc), by the host of robo-like pets available (hello office favourite the Pleo) and our obsession with making mechanical mates shows no sign of stopping. The Pomi is next in the series of highly crafted devices as it can actually emit smells based on how it feels. Feelings in a machine, you ask? Never! Well, the robot can interact with people based on a voice recognition system, and also has a fake heart which beats.

Pomi (which stands for (Penguin Robot for Multimodal Interaction) is thought to be the next generation of service robots, with its user friendly interactive services and cuddly looking exterior. There is a certain logic in creating robots to look friendly as people will be more prone to adopt it into their life. Pomi emits two fragrances depending whether its happy or sad, and as there are no details on the scent I can only imagine they'll be a rotting fish vs Chanel No.5. No saying what Pomi will actually do, but hey, he smells! What more could you want?
