What is it?

It's an update to the current firmware on the iPhone, and the firmware version that will be shipped with the newly announced iPhone 3G. What does it do? A lot more stuff. The iPhone was previously criticised with not playing nicely with enterprise users, but this has been addressed. There's push synching of emails and calendars for those that use Microsoft ActiveSync, remote wiping and better encryption.

There's also support for a whole host of new applications from third party developers. These will take advantage of things like the accelorometer, GPS and multi-touch interface, creating everything from games to social networking tools.

Where can I get those?

From iTunes new App Store, where some will be free and some paid for. When you purchase one you'll be able to download it over the air through WiFi or over your network (depending on the size). When an update becomes available you'll automatically be notified, and you can update it over the air.

What else?

The overall functionality has been improved, with features like the mass deletion of email, the ability to search for specific contacts and parental controls.

How much?

It'll be free to existing iPhone users, and $9.99 to iPod Touch users.
