Facebook vs Myspace: The battle has been won (and rightly so)

It was inevitable. We all knew it was coming. They've been rivals for soooo long, with Facebook trailing behind in visitor numbers for ages... until now. Today it's official - Facebook is finally the front-runner in the battle of the social networks (it's about time). I'm waving my Facebook flag high today. I've been saying it for *ages*, but now I'm not the only one who thinks Facebook is better than MySpace.

There are loads of reasons why Facebook wipes the floor with MySpace. Here we go. Design-wise, Facebook has a nice and simple design, with a neatly organised profile that makes it easy for you and your visitors to navigate through. Although Facebook pages are different, they all retain that neatly uniformed structure that allows you to find everything you're after. MySpace isn't so clean-cut. Yes, you can customise your own page (which sounds good in theory), but this usually results (99 percent of the time) in an over-use of images, graphics and clashing colours. People think they're being creative, but what they fail to realise is it's just visual diarrhoea to the rest of us.

There are too many reasons that prove Facebook's superiority, so here are a few of my favourites. Tagging pictures and adding Flickr and other photo-sharing site streams to your page has to be one of my favourite Facebook features. Although MySpace uses Photobucket, it's just not the same. I also like that Facebook allows users to upload their own music to their page, rather than making it ALL about the music and the band. It's great that MySpace provides this service for upcoming musicians, but not for normal folk. Without the music as a focal point, MySpace pages are actually quite boring.

For me, the fun-factor just isn't there with MySpace. Facebook has really fun and often childish applications that don't require much thought, just the willingness to have a go - take a quiz, rate your mates, create a group to pay homage to Jeremy Clarkson, create a South Park character, watch funny videos on your super wall, update your Facebook status with your latest escapades etc. There's more room for personalisation with MySpace, such as the personalised URLs - but it's not enough. MySpace is missing the high fun-factor that Facebook gives its users. There's much more room for fun with Facebook. Go Facebook - yay.

They've both been on very different journeys to achieve success. MySpace was an instant hit after being founded in 2003. This was mainly down to the emphasis towards independent bands and their fans. Facebook, founded in 2004, initially began as a restricted site for members of elite universities. They gradually expanded and accepted the general public into their social network. Facebook has since gained loads of popularity, which has seen a flood of new members and the launch of many Facebook applications such as MyRockband.

MySpace has done a lot of firsts and has beaten Facebook to the front-line many times. A good example of this is the implementation of translated versions of their site. MySpace has been doing this since 2006, whereas Facebook only introduced this in January this year. MySpace may have been the leader all this time, but I'm sure you're all familiar with the fable, the tortoise and the hare - being fast doesn't always win the race, being slow and steady and *way* cooler (ok I made up the last bit, but you get my drift) means you'll win in the end. Put it this way. Last year I set up a MySpace and a Facebook account. I still use Facebook.
