As the world gets increasingly tech-orientated, women are apparently at the forefront of what's hot in the world of tech. Gone are the days where we're associated with cutesy/pink/sparkly/basic gadgets. According to Sony Ericsson, we spend more on gadgets than we do on shoes - on average, £391 a year. That's a total of £17 billion. Not only that, we're also driving the uptake of online video and web TV (high-five ladies).

Once upon a time, manufacturers believed that all women were after was gadgets covered in pink and glitter (I guess they were working with the chauvinistic premise that pink for girls). Boy were they wrong. And while I'm here, I'm going to condemn the term 'boys toys'. What's that about? Because they're really hi-tech and complicated that automatically makes it a toy for a boy huh? BS.

Gadgets are now apparently being feminised, and it's a change that's long overdue according to many. Light weight camera phones and clamshell handsets were once thought of as a load of rubbish that would never catch on. A camera on a mobile phone was even deemed a terrible idea. In the meantime, Japan has been producing gadgets like this for years. But over the years it's finally been realised that easy-to-use, attractive gadgets would appeal to both men and women.

A lot of companies found checking accessories in women's handbags proved very useful. Gadgets starting being based on being compact and great fashion accessories. For example, take a look at the range of compact cameras out there, sleek sat navs and not to mention stylish laptops such as the Ego and MacBook Air.

Women have been underrepresented in the past, but check us out now. We're the ones setting the latest trends. You heard it here, consumer tech is losing its masculine and very bleak status. And it's about bloody time too!
