Cars will become mobile computers with Microsoft auto

Having a PC in your car doesn't exactly sound practical. Just like the in-dash TV's, it in fact sounds like it would be the cause of many a car crash. However, according to Microsoft, in-dash infotainment, emergency and diagnostic systems also known as telematics, is a fast-growing sector that will make cars a lot more fun and safer to drive.

Microsoft's ultimate aim is to transform your car into a Windows machine (must refuse urge to make car crash joke). In the past, telematics have been found in high-end, luxury cars only. Microsoft plan to change all that and introduce telematics for the normal folk, in a Windows for cars product called Microsoft Auto. It represents "telematics for the rest of us".

The development of the ultimate 'mobile computer' is already underway. Microsoft has teamed up with Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group and will co-develop the "next generation of infotainment systems". This basically means you'll be able to get Microsoft Auto in Hyundai's cheap cars within the next two years.

The system, which has not yet been named, will produce something as powerful as a small laptop and will apparently behave like one. Drivers will be able to remain connected to their information and entertainment while on the go. I'm not sure if this is a great breakthrough for technology or a huge car crash epidemic waiting to happen? What do you think?
