Blackberry Bold sets smartphone hearts a-racing

Blackberry has pulled a smartphone out for us this May Monday morning - the Blackberry Bold (or the 9000). So named because the screen was apparently identified as such by focus groups, it's a 480x320, 65,000 colour display. Connectivity wise, you're looking at HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0 and full GPS.

The backplate is made of the awfully-named 'leatherette', and Blackberry will apparently send you a blue, grey or red one to replace the black for free a small cost if you request it. You'll notice they've kept the trackball, which has now been given extra functionality, like making it easier to zoom in and out of web pages. Web browsing has been an issue with previous models, but this is apparently all fixed in this new model, with the option to browse sites in full HTML or as a mobile version.

The 1GB internal memory can be expanded with the microSD slot, and you can use your own headphones in the 3.5mm input. The camera is only 2 megapixels, but can record video.

When will you be able to lay your hands on one? Well, it's currently listed as 'summer'. It's feeling pretty damn summery today in London, so hopefully we'll see it soon.
