As it was National Secretaries Day this week (23rd), we've decided to pay homage to this appreciation/celebration of administrative duties carried out by secretaries worldwide (even though we're a day late). Take a look at our top ten list of office gadgetry, great for practicality, convenience and general all round silliness. All in the name of this unofficial holiday.
1. Vacuum Cleaner USB mouse
Fed up of those old McVities crumbs getting stuck to your hand as you're typing away? This desktop vacuum cleaner will suck those pesky crumbs right up. It will also clean all the gook that congregates between your keys and behind your monitor. Saying that, this is a reminder that I am in desperate need of one of these!
2. i-Buddy
This cute little USB MSN angel/fairy will react in its own unique little way each time there is some kind of activity - a contact logs in, when you receive messages etc. i-Buddy even detects emotions via the emoticons contained in the messages and will respond accordingly. For example if the blushing emoticon is detected, your i-Buddy will glow red. Its big head will even light up and its little wings will flutter. Great for avid MSNers.
3. USB webcam missile launcher
Yes, we know this is not exactly a typical gadget a secretary would have on their desk. Here at Shiny we believe a desk is not a desk until it has some kind of playful gadget to mess around with sitting prominently and proudly on your desk. So we give you this wonderful plaything to shoot at your work buddies complete with absolute precision.
4. Desktop coffee maker
Fancy a cup of coffee but you're too busy/lazy to get up and make yourself a brew? The desktop coffee maker is designed for people exactly like you. It's simple. Fill the water compartment and put the coffee in the filter. Wait 2-3 minutes and ta-da - you'll have an individual cup of coffee to keep you awake or perhaps give you the energy to move your lazy ass from that desk.
5. Crosshair USB mouse pad with 4 port hub
You can never have too much USB ports. Testament to that is this nifty mouse pad with 4 Hi-Speed USB 2.0 ports. Compatible with USB 1.1 and it can also be connected to full speed and low speed devices and that's all you need to know really.
6. Bendi Board - pink flexible keyboard
Desk set-ups can be very boring so why not add some funk into your desk with this neon pink silicon keyboard. It's flexible (good if you like to bend keyboards), waterproof (great for drink spillers and messy eaters) and compact (you can roll it up and take it on your travels.) It's great for people who have the tendency to type very loudly as the soft material means silent typing.
7. Dr Who Tardis 4-way USB hub
Ardent Dr Who fans will love this little contraption. Plug in or remove your memory stick/dongle/MP3 player from one of the four USB hubs. The blue light on top of the Tardis will flash and that distinct Tardis sound (that's the best way I can describe it) starts to fill the air. No time traveling we're afraid. Warning: you may annoy your colleagues and maybe yourself!
8. USB panic button
This has been designed for people who have a tendency to drift off and surf the web/Facebook/Shiny Shiny/porn when they should be hard at work. Unlike some work shirkers who panic and frantically tap away at their mouse to make out they're hard at work, this is a much easier way to instantaneously conceal what you shouldn't be looking at. Simply hit the cartoon-esque red button and a boring work document will appear.
9. The oracle stress-o-meter
How can you tell if work is stressing you out or not? Generally, you can tell based on whether or not the veins in your forehead are pulsing. But if your stress is a little less extreme than that, you can let the stress-o-meter dictate what mood you're in and whether you need to take it easy. Simply place your fingers on the oracle while it reads your stress vibrations. Not to be taken seriously, of course, otherwise we'd all need a day off.
