The new Emporia mobile: is it just for old people?

emporia.jpgWhy is it that simple mobile handsets are associated with the older generation? I'm not disputing that older people (over 50s) have basic and uncomplicated phones (most of them do). However, a lot of them are also up-to-date with the latest Blackberrys, PDAs and Smartphones. I also know plenty of young folk with the most basic of mobile phones, simply because they like to have less complex phones.

So, why is it then that Emporia Mobile have just announced an updated mobile aimed at the geriatric generation? Their justification for this is that it has a very loud hands free speakerphone, an extra large display, oversized buttons and a flashlight. It also comes with one-touch dialling of an ICE or emergency SMS and it's very light in weight (138g to be precise).

But let's face it - these are all things that could very easily appeal to the younger generation of phone users. What girl wouldn't love one touch emergency services when she's faced with a dark street?

Love it. I agree though - why do people think that a simple phone with nice finger sized buttons are only for the geriatric generation. But I am glad that they are thinking about it. I would definitely get this phone for my grandma.

Ok, I have had it with those companies who are targeting 'oldsters' with very basic electronics so as not to muddle the minds of those over 50.

I am 57 years old and not only am I employed in a technology field I AM A WOMAN IN TECHNOLOGY. I carry a cell phone, a Crackberry, a pager. I own and use Wii. I have a MySpace page, am on Facebook and adore ShinyShiny website as it caters to my love for gadgets! I am an early adopter of all things electronic (my kids call me Inspector Gadget). Why do they think we are idiots???????

Thanks for letting me ventJane Martin
