Does the Wii Fit actually get you fit? The reviews decide...

I tried out the Wii Fit last month, and I have to say, I totally <3 it. However, 20 minutes of yoga doth not a supermodel make, and as of yet I haven't managed to lay my hands on one, so can't give you a personal look at what the potential results are. However, I can provide you with some super quick summaries of what those on the World Wide Web have concluded. Does it actually result in a flatter tummy and lower BMI? Read on...

Kotaku: "I started out at roughly 79 kilograms (174 pounds), which is almost overweight for someone of my height. (Ironically, that's about where I ended up!) Even as I was doing Wii Fit on a regular basis, I noticed odd spikes up and down." So, no glowing 'I dropped 20 pounds in 20 days' recommendation, but he certainly enjoyed it.

4 color rebellion: Jackpot! A seven week review, entitled 'The Great Experiment". This guy does about 45 minutes a day, and the conclusion is that he's lost 10.8 lbs or 4.9 kilos. So, quite a commitment, but a pretty decent result... And if that's not enough, the review ends in a wedding story!

Product-Reviews: The title of this piece is '2 days with the Wii Fit: The balance board is life changing' so that feels positive, and with a conclusion of "Wii Fit 10/10, best £69 I have spent in a long time" you get the feeling he's a fan. Sadly, two days is slightly too short to see any actual effects, but ho hum.

The Lipster: Hooray! Someone who is talking weight loss! Unfortunately, the reviewer at tester has lost only a pound in two weeks. Still, it's better than putting weight on, and she puts it down to being able to pick and choose the easy exercises rather than a fault with the Wii.

Total Video Games: This is an in-depth seven day review. It's not long enough, but the reviewer did see a one pound weight loss, and a BMI reduction of 0.13. They conclude "It's made daily exercise fun and appealing, plus its lessons about the body have had a lasting effect".

But, here's the kicker. Here's a review of someone who used Wii Sports for 30 minutes each day, for a total of six weeks. They also lost 9 pounds. The conclusion? The bundled Wii Sports game may be just as effective as the £70 Wii Fitness.

Hi me and my boyfriend have been doing wii fit everyday for 3 weeks at least 30mins a day each plus eating healthly. we have both lost 10 pounds each. I t may not work for some people but it had definitely awakened my enthusiasm for exercise and we have decided upon joining a real gym and going swimming. My stomach is flatter my thighs and backside are firmer, and my boyfriends weight is disapearing by the minute.
Maybe those who are not losing much weight are just relying on exercise alone, but for me I have to do both to get results.
good luck everyone who is trying to lose weight keep it up!!!

I started using the Wii Fit every day on Dec 24th. I do 30 minutes on the elliptical and 30 minutes on Wii Fit. On the weekends I do about 45 on the elliptical and an hour on the Wii. I am a runner but with it being so cold, I haven't ran in a long time. I'm almost back to the weight I was 10 years ago as a teenager who ran track and lifted. I've lost about 5 pounds since Dec 24th. I'm trying to get into great shape for my wedding, and I just love the Wii Fit. Once it gets nicer outside, I'm going to start running again and will continue to do the Wii Fit.

You've almost convinced me, Alli!

I got Wii Fit for Christmas. Since then I've been eating right, reducing portion sizes, and working out on the Wii at least four times a week for 30+ minutes. I noticed almost immediate results in my measurements (lost 2" on the lovehandles in about 2 weeks) and in this 33 days, I've also lost about 7 pounds. Not too shabby! Btw, I'm at the higher end of normal with my BMI. I think a heavier person would have even better results. My boyfriend has just been working out with no change in eating habits and he's only lost a few pounds (maybe about 3 or 4) in the same time period.

I have been using Wii Fit for about 2 months now. And I had to make a real commitment to do the exercises every day! I followed the Fitness tips they gave me and ate healthy. From 150 pounds I am now 130!

I started on my Wii Fit 6 days ago, 5 months after having my beautiful baby. I had put alot of weight on (around 3 stones) during pregnancy and have struggled to shift it since. However, In 6 days I have lost 4lbs, going on the Wii Fit daily, and spending at least 30mins on the aerobics before considering any other type of exercise. I have still been eating unhealthily so I am really going to go for it now and do my best. It really has worked and helped to make me much more motivated!!! Id recommend it to anyone if you are willing to put the work in!

I bought the Wii Fit ages ago and for the latter part of my owning all it really did for me was collect dust under my tv. However, I've started using it more recently and I think that if you stick to say doing half an hour on the Wii Fit 5 times a week WITH a calorie cotrolled diet you will see HUGE results. I played on it one night and dropped 2 pounds! I think people need to remember that it's not the be all, end all of excercise/weight loss; it's great for bigger people (ike myself) who want to lose some weight by working out privately. If someone stuck to this I'm sure they would get out what they put in and once they'd boosted their confidence with the reminders of how much weight they'd lost they could take out a gym membership or go out walking/jogging?
Long term fitness equipment? No
Long term confidence booster? Definitely.

Best £69 you will ever spend!

i bought the wii at xamas i have lost 1stone 6 lbs it is grrrreat

I think what the Wii fit question proves is that this 'game' is as good as ANY system to which you are willing to apply some effort.

I am sure that most people know that it is possible to become extremely fit in under six weeks with vigorous training (military style), but when self motivated, the vehicle that gets you there is an entirely different issue.

Can the Wii fit do it?

It is about as likely as any method. Keep fit DVDs, jogging, going to the gym. They are all the same.

The real question is do you want it bad enough?

Will you switch it back on again after the first attempt (or go back to the gym, even though it is raining)?

The real question is, "Do DIY fitness methods work?"

The answer is, "Well that depends on YOU!"
