Now perhaps it's just the way was brought up but I have a fairly encyclopaedic knowledge of food calorie content swirling around in my head. Average sized apple - 50. Slightly larger? 60 calories. 30g of cereal, approx 95-120 kcal. Go on, ask me some more. The only thing I can't calculate is portion sizes, since as sharp as my brain is, it can't work out the difference of 100g of pasta from 90g just by looking at it. I can tell you the calorie difference though - 328-360, but that's none too helpful when cooking, now is it?

Well, these mini-scales may be a lifesaver as they calculate the weight and nutritional content of over 1,400 foods. How do they do this you may ask? Well, you press the desired buttons on the scales and input whatever you're weighing and then it works out the calories, protein, carbohydrates, total sugars, total fats, saturated fat, fibre, sodium, cholesterol, net carbohydrates & the GI value of your food. Phew. I have to admit that beats my paltry calorie knowledge by miles. You can also use the scales to record your daily food intake and see if you've been overdoing it on the carb front. It's now available in this portable model , so you don't need to compromise your obsessive diet/healthy living plan just because you are on holiday.
