My favourite wastes of time: Katie Lee

Comments (2)

Katie Lee, loving the internetThis week "My favourite wastes of time" is brought to you by Katie Lee, your beloved, much missed ex-editor of Shiny Shiny (had anyone even noticed I'd gone? Anyone? No?). I may be founder of Shiny Media, but what other websites keep me clicking back time and time again? I bet you just can't wait to find out...

I'm pretty sure I set up Shiny Media so I could stop skiving off on the internet all day, and start calling it "working". However, the bigger Shiny Media gets, the less time I get to play online; and the longer the internet exists, the more of my favourite bloggers start hanging up their Typepad accounts. It's making me feel old.

So thank god for Ze Frank, one of my early web-celeb heroes, still going strong and funnier than ever. If you didn't catch his "The Show" ("thinking so you don't have to") last year, treat yourself to a marathon watching session. A personal favourite is "Hindsight", in which he sings an ode to his hangover.

I'm probably someone who has more hobbies than I probably need, all of which I seem to have chosen with the sole intention of making myself seem as old and uncool as I possibly can.

With that in mind, my favourite hobby blogs are:

Crochet: Vintage Stitch-o-Rama by the possibly the funniest/scariest craftster out there. She doesn't update that often, which is a good thing - I hate having to play catch up. I have my own crochet blog too, which is here.

Woodlands: The Woodlands.co.uk blog. I just bought a wood (as you do); now I need to know how to whittle. There's currently an article about spoon carving on there...

Camping: The Happy Campers. I love a spot of camping (hence the wood purchase), and the Happy Campers girls have a lovely website, with a blog and a campsite reviews section. Just looking at this site makes me happy. Hence the name, presumably.

Reading: The Bookseller Crow. Not only is this a great, funny blog, it's written by my local bookshop owner, a lovely chap (who just happens to stock my other half's book -- The Mousehunter). Sorry couldn't let that opportunity go by without a plug.

Also: I couldn't live without the excellent Craftster forums or Etsy, which is the best place to buy unusual stuff, and get ideas.

TV: TV Squad. Obviously, Shiny Media publishes the excellent TV Scoop, but since we're supposed to be picking out non-Shiny sites, I also frequent TV Squad to find out what US shows are worth watching

Thanks to all those hobbies, I also stalk Lifehacker in the hopes of finding ways to work less and play more.

For shopping, I love using my Wists account, which is where I collect together all the aspirational homewares that I want to buy.

And finally, if I'm ever bored of browsing the same old websites, I head over to LinkMachineGo, where there's always a few new and exciting sites to look at.

Hi Katie lee. So nice to see you. Ze Frank was one of Star's favorites as well, I believe. I gave it a shot once, but didn't really see the appeal. Perhaps it is a generational thing. I might give another go. ANd try some of the other time wasting sites as well. Not that I need any more diversions when I should be paying bills and returning emails online.

Aww, hi Sarcasmom! Thanks for leaving such a nice comment. It's amazing how often we think about Star here - so much of what we do reminds us of the things she liked. Maybe because she was a geek like us! Hope you and the rest of Star's family and friends are all well over there in Philly. x
