Instead of producing a whole new M8, Leica has created a package of a new sapphire LCD screen that can only be scratched by diamond plus a new more stable, quieter shutter. You book an update slot with Leica and the company picks it up and ships it to Germany for a refit. Firmware will also be upgraded and your warranty is extended for two years. This package can be bought from March for about $1,800 (£900), with more to follow. Leica fans do tend to be a dedicated bunch, so I can imagine it'll be popular despite the cost.
Leica isn't touting this as an eco-friendly option, but I can't help thinking that production scale and unnecessary packaging are substantially reduced if you send your camera in for a refit and upgrade rather than buying a whole new one, even if there is still plenty of transport involved.
