Warner Brothers pledges allegiance to Blu-ray + HD-DVD cancels press conference = format war over?

CES hasn't even kicked off yet but we may have seen the biggest announcement already. There's been serious ructions in the HD DVD camp, after Warner announced they were going exclusively to Blu-ray, the rival high definition format. They were previously in negotiations with HD DVD and were expected to pledge their support to them.

This has resulted in the HD DVD press conference being cancelled, which was scheduled for Sunday. Toshiba are (understandably) upset with Warner and have released a statement to this effect, implying their may be some kind of breach of contract on their part.

Could this mean the end of the format war? It's certainly the biggest development in recent months, and could be the thing to break the stalemate. It's guaranteed to have an effect on many of the CES exhibitors as well - there may be some very late nights pulled by certain CE bosses here in Las Vegas over the next few nights.

Gizmodo has already been on the line to Warner Brothers, discussing the reasons behind their decision. They've basically attributed it to the format war having an adverse effect on normal DVD sales, as consumers were choosing to put off buying DVDs until an outcome was reached.
