Having a comfortably large map screen without obliterating your visibility is a challenge, as is listening to some of the more plummy guides. Virtual Cable is a built-in system that does away with all that by simply drawing your route on your windscreen for you.

It uses fighter pilot technology and a combination of mirrors, lasers and lenses to create a 3D red line hovering comfortably in front of you for you to follow, Indiana Jones route-map style. As well as somewhat lessening the chances of taking a wrong turn, the device is hidden behind the dashboard and can be connected to existing sat nav kits. Fewer distractions and more guidance for £200 sounds like a good deal to me. It's not available commercially just yet, but the manufacturers are 'in talks' so we could see it in a Mini Metro near you soon.
