The Tria - an end to hairy legs forever?

Now I'm sure you don't need me to tell you just how frustrating shaving/waxing/epilating can be, and no matter how silky smooth your legs are one day that give a day they'll be bristling with pesky stubble. Up till now options were fairly limited; wear jeans all the time and wax every four weeks, hair remove and deal with the chemical smell, or splash out and go for laser hair removal, the only permanent treatment around.

Problem is , laser hair removal costs serious bucks, as it's approx £50 a time for your underarms or £200 for your legs, and you need 6-8 treatments on average. Now I've already tried laser treatment before at the sk:n clinic so I can testify it does work, but I want something that isn't going to have my bank manger chasing me down the street with a sharp object. And then the Tria comes along, an all in one DIY laser hair removal device that promises you salon results at home. Now here's the science bit...

The Tria will only work on fair to medium complexions, as the laser is attracted to the melanin in the skin, and could potentially burn darker skin tones. The booklet warns you not to use it on burnt skin, open sores, all the usual safety stuff.

The hairdryer like Tria is actually a diode laser that emits a short pulse of red light every time all three sensors are in contact with your skin. Each area takes about a second to do and then you move on, but be warned the laser head is very small, so it will take a while. I did both my legs last night and that took about an hour; but getting to do it whilst watching TV really isn't that bad. There are three settings, from low to high, and the best results are with high, so work up to it. It really isn't that bad, as I was using level 2 yesterday, and just so you know my pain threshold- I find waxing THE MOST painful thing EVER.

Unlike my salon treatments (on my underarms, if you must know), you need to be freshly shaved for the Tria, otherwise every beep, will be extra painful. The instructions also say you can repeat the treatment every 2-4 weeks, unlike the strict 6 week rule that salons enforce.

Above you can see a picture from one of the test subjects and I think the results look pretty good. I'm testing it now, so look out for a follow up in a few months time with a before and after pic, as well as a video showing you exactly how it works. I'll keep you posted, and I'm crossing my fingers for a hair free summer 2008.

is it like traditional laser treatments unsuitable for dark skin tones?

I'm afdraid this doesn't work on darker skin tones. Hopefully pne day they'll devisea product that does.

21st century or not folks are too caught up in the shaving of the body.for example, a woman shouldn't have to feel consceous or embarassed because she chose not to shave.Hair on the body is a natrual thing by nature, infact by GOD"S design;and a female is no less of a woman because she chose to go with hair on her legs and arms.people should be more concern about truth, honesty and how we can devise new ways of living together better as one people.

Leon, you need to get real. There is nothing wrong with women not wanting to be covered in fur like our caveman ancestors. Besides, God wouldn't let us design lasers if he didn't want us to use them.

Zara, keep us posted on your progress. If this device works, I'm getting one!

Any chance of an update Zara? :)

Hi Guys,
So many of you have been asking about results so far I thought Id give you an update. 2 months in now and had about 3 sessions. Have noticed slightly less hair and that I can take longer between shaves but still definitely regular stubble. Then again, it DOES take the full amount of sessions (due to the hair growth cycle) to determine if positive results. Fingers crossed. xoxo

What an amazing thing! I'm totally getting one. It's a bit expensive but it's totally worth it! At the end of the day it works out at about 25 full-leg waxes. If getting this means that I don't ever have to face pain, irritation, bumpy regrowth, exposing myself to strangers whilst being covered in sticky stuff, I'm ready to shell out.

Just did some Google-ing and found it for sale at £591 on beautyisskindeep.com!http://www.beautyisskindeep.com/man_30_tria.html

Any update on this?

...yes Zara it would be great to hear your opinions on the Tria after nearly 6 months

just ordered one so hope it works for me. I paid £632 including postage which is the cheapest I could find at Win Health website. Tried beauty is skin deep site as above but vat was not included in this price. I,ll keep u updated.

We'd like to know how you get on - it's certainly an interesting product.

I do believe that 3 sessions in 2 months is too many for good results. I have been told that you need to laser the hairs when they are in their most vulnerable state, meaning you have you wait at least 10 weeks after every session, but this is different for every person. If you do not wait long enough, you get the hairs in the wrong phase and instead of getting rid of them completely, they will become thinner instead. And thin hairs are much harder to get rid of. So not only will it take móre sessions to get rid of all the hairs if you do not wait long enough, but also the end result might be less good. You need to wait at least 10 weeks, and you need to wait for the hair to grow back as thick as it gets, and for it to have been like that for at least 2 weeks. Then you laser again.
Just trying to help! Good luck!
