Mobile Fun digs deep to bury your phones in Russia

Comments (1)

mobile%20burial.jpgWe know that the eco-friendly thing to do is recycle our old handsets, but plenty still end up in landfills. Now you can be a little more selective about exactly which patch of ground your mobile ends up in (as long as it's in the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly).

Mobile Fun is a UK-based site offering ringtones and mobile games; it's now also running a burial service for old phones in Russia. For a small fee (about £20) your handset is carted off to Russia and for an additional sum you can even receive a final farewell SMS from the country of its final resting place. It'll find its eternal peace in the world's largest iron ore basin, a place so magnetically anomalous that compasses don't work there. Fancy that. The site was chosen not only because it should reduce the environmental impact from the electromagnetic radiation given off by many buried phones but because of a growing belief among mental mobile phone users in Russia that "over time, some personal electromagnetic 'zen' becomes trapped inside old mobile phones" which Kursk could help release. Riiiiight.

Hmm bit of a novelty. I can't see it working, maybe that's why they're making quite a few people redundant at the moment...
