Macworld Expo 2008: (kinda) Apple unveils new high performance Mac Pro

apple_macpro_2008_quad_core.jpgApple does like to time big Macworld announcements so that CES is forced to roll its eyes and smile politely (what company wouldn't?), but the iPhone announcement was always going to be a hard act to follow. As it is, the most exciting advance buzz we've had is effectively from Microsoft, or at least the Macintosh BDU and it's release of Office for Mac 2008.

Even if they're saving the deeply necessary 3G iPhone announcement for the big moment, it seems strange to start announcing high performance products during CES instead of waiting for their week in the sun. This Mac Pro almost slipped under the radar which would be a shame for Apple fans and high performance computer users as it's a doozy; one can only hope that this means so much Apple goodness next week that some had to be released early.

The new monster packs two Quad-Core Xeon 5400 processors from Intel, running at up to 3.2GHz, which effectively doubles the performance of the previous powerful model. There's up to 4TB of storage, too, support for the latest generation of NVIDIA graphics and the power to drive up to eight 30" displays simultaneously. Niiice.
