If you're in the market for a camcorder in 2008, Panasonic is determined to draw you in. Two new "active" SD models - including one that's waterproof - join two full high definition models and four that are a mixture of hybrid SD/HDD, DVD and miniDV.
The compact SD pair focus on ease of portability and handy holiday features. As such the pictured SDR-SW20 is dust proof, can be submerged underwater up to five feet and is shockproof for drops of up to four feet. The SDR-S7 is ultra-mobile. Both models have 10x optical zoom and 2.7" LCD screens and can be used pistol-grip style thanks to the Sub Rec front-mounted button. The .waterproof model is due next month for around $399.95, with its compact cousin landing in May for $299.95
Panasonic also seemed to be launching a competition for the number of times it could fit "world's first" in to a conference. The world's current smallest and lightest SD card HD camcorder, the HDC-SD9, joined the list, weighing just over half a pound and recording to SD. Accompanying it is the less compact but still small HDC-HS9, a hybrid model that records to HD or to 60GB of built in hard drive.
Both offer full HD 1920 x 1080 recording at 24fps, using the AVCHD video format. Both also have optical image stabilising and Leica Dicomar lenses, alongside Face Detection technology and Intelligent Shooting Guides which display shooting tips when poor conditions are detected. Both are compatible with the Viera Link functions previously mentioned for TVs and home cinema systems.
Both models are due in March of this year at $799.95 for the HDC-SD9 and $1099.95 for the HSC-SH9.
Finally, there are four more new models; the SDR-H60 (60GB) and SDR-H40 (40GB) are hybrid SD / HDD units, the VDR-D50 is straight to DVD and the PV-GS90 records to miniDV tapes. All four have optical image stabilisation, and the SDR-H60 has an ultra-powerful 50x optical zoom, with all other models packing a non too shabby 42x (pictured above right).
This groups has suggested prices of $349.95 for the DVD model (January), $279.95 for the miniDV tape version (February) and $449.95 and $549.95 respectively for the 40GB (January) and 60GB (May) SD/HDD pair.
