The Siemens' Math, Science and Technology Prize has had a unique year; all the winners were female. Entries from high school girls had been increasing gradually over the last nine years since the prize was established, now reaching 48%. But even those who took part, such as individual winner Isha Jain, complained that often the ratio is quite different: "It's usually seven or eight guys to one girl." Isha must be feeling pretty happy about her achievements- and her $100,000 scholarship - right now, and she's taken the time to comment about the fact that she feels that women are "finally stepping up to the plate and are more than capable. And I'm proud to be part of that."
Isha, reserved English women can be a little embarrassed about cheerleading, but the Greek part of me is happy to tell you I'm now a big fan of yours. Congratulations are also due to Janelle Schlossberger and Amanda Harinoff, who scooped the team prize, another $100,000 scholarship, for their research into tuberculosis.
