First glimpse of Google Android "in the wild"

It's all getting a bit David Attenborough. An anonymous tip off to Gizmodo has resulted in much blog excitement (okay, a few raised eyebrows, perhaps) over this first glimpse of Google's Android OS out in the open.

The speculation is as much over the hardware as Android itself; this seems likely to be an HTC handset running an early version of the software. According to the user, who is a programmer, Android is already "light and fast" and "a lot more put together than Windows Mobile 5 on the back side of things". Given that HTC and Microsoft have been snuggling under the covers together for a long time, it's perhaps not surprising that this initial design is a bit standard, blocky and Windows Mobile smartphone-esque (that's assuming it is HTC). Then again, it's all just a showcase for the software, which sounds promising even in early form.
