Having been caught short by entering a CC zone a few minutes early without realising, I welcome any device that will help forgetful drivers avoid the whopping penalties imposed for not paying the London Congestion Charge. The KenBuster is a GPS system that registers your location and triggers an automatic payment to TfL as appropriate, confirming its actions with a text to you.
The box is no bigger than the average mobile and aims to rapidly reduce the number of people fined, which is estimated at being 4,500 a day - around six percent of drivers within the zone. Using accounts from 2005/06 the inventor of the device, Matthew McCluskey, estimated that 31% of TfL's Congestion Charge revenue comes from this six percent. Despite his general support for the charge, it was his frustration at what he felt was exorbitant fining that led to the KenBuster. Pre-orders are being accepted now for a December 1st release. Motorists can choose between a one-off payment of £49.99 and an £8/month yearly subscription or a £199.99 lifetime purchase with no subscription and tired units replaced free. It's designed for very regular Central London motorists who will be the ones to get the best value from it.
