Is the future looking male?

According to Anne Spackman, online editor of Times Online, the future of online journalism looks bleak male. She reasons that it's only men who get excited about technology, and only men who will bother to learn the skills necessary to work and publish online.

Pitchforks down, ladies.

From my desk I can see over a dozen people, all busily writing about everything from fashion to the environment. And yes, they're even publishing their work. And guess what? One of them is male. Now, I accept that this is the exception, rather than the norm, but I can assure you, we're all managing quite nicely with all this new fangled internets jiggery pokery.

Firstly, you don't need to have a massive interest in technology to blog, just as you don't need to have a extensive knowledge of how paper is made to write for a newspaper. Content management systems are increasingly simple to use, and some basic html knowledge isn't difficult to pick up.

Blogging, video blogging, podcasting - they're all a means of getting your point across, rather than existing for the sake of themselves.

You've only got to look on YouTube to be assured that it's not just men who are getting involved. It's a massive leap from YouTube to journalism, but it involves the basic skills that can make you attractive to employers.

Anne Spackman also goes on to say she has never met a single female developer, which must mean she really hasn't been looking very hard. With the success of schemes like Girl Geek Dinners, there's a massive community of women who work very much in the technical side of the industry - a quick google search would have told Ms Spackman that.

full disclosure - i am neither a blogger nor a developer, but i am a girl/woman/female/techie/geek and i am offended at anne spackman's comments. spackman's "oh well might as well give up" attitude won't help women to make strides in their chosen fields.
