Hippyshopper is slowly but surely trying to steal our self-awarded crown of best gadget blog in the whole world ever. Yesterday, they were telling us about the iPhone and its environmental impact. Today, they've found a gadget for working out and alerting you to your energy consumption.

The gizmo, The Wattson, not only tells you how much your electricity bill is going to be if you keep on using that much energy, it also lights up with a pleasingly modern LED glow to alert you to your energy wastage. If it's blue, you're doing a fine job of saving energy, but if it's red you probably need to turn off a few more appliances.

This product strikes me as magical, in a kind of Harry Potter meets Al Gore way. I like it.

Slightly ironic that you need to buy an electrical device to reduce your consumption – but seriously, this is a good idea. You could even turn it into a game – getting the number down to a figure as low as possible & posting them on the Internet as a "high-score".
