Despite mounting costs that have seen the price of the budget laptop nearly double, Uruguay is the first country to take part in the global project to see every child using a computer by putting in an order for 100,000 machines.
The XO laptop was the product of the One Laptop per Child organisation with the aim that children - mainly in the developing world - could have access to affordable, robust technology to further their learning. It's tough, waterproof and adaptable to solar power, foot pumps or pull-string chargers. Its anti-glare display means it can be used outside on a sunny day, and it has no moving parts. It was originally conceived to be sold in bundles of 250,000 for $100, but due to a struggle to attract orders there are now different bulk ordering and donation systems in place and laptops cost around $190.
