Not every Philips announcement can be as exciting as the concept projects showcased at Sense and Simplicity this week. But some of them can be useful, such as this whopping one terabyte external hard drive. Although the word "terabyte" is now familiar to most, it's still relatively uncommon to see that much storage in a mainstream product, and this single-disk drive will have those with massive backups to do rubbing their hands with glee.
The eSATA interface that the SPD5130 uses is, so Philips claims, "six times quicker than the industry-standard USB 2.0", so you should be able to swiftly and easily back up and retrieve your films, photos, music and Terribly Important Secret Documents. A 32Mb buffer protects your data as it transfers to minimise possible errors. The armour-like construction of what remains a fairly slim box is designed to dampen noise from the drive, and the built in fan and aluminium casing protect the drive from overheating and shocks. The SPD5130 is available this month at around £299.99.
