Chumby: widget wonderland without a computer

The Chumby is a heavenly geek gadget that has been going around in prototype form for a while now but looks set for a major full release next month. It's a wireless widget box and once you've paid for it you don't have to subscribe to a damn thing. You can organise your news and information into channels, and use the coffee mug sized box as your constant link to all things Interweb. Not only that, but the teeny retro-tv-style box of Internet goodness is totally and utterly hackable; the makers of the Chumby want you to customise it every which way.

In shades of black, a tan colour called "latte" and pearl white, the box will be under $200, and widgets from the likes of The Weather Channel, eBay, Craigslist and more will be available along with the ability to play music and use the Chumby as an alarm clock. The accelerometer and touchscreen mean you can play games on it too, and as it's always on it's constantly updated. Downsides? Well, as you don't switch it off, it's probably not so eco-friendly.

The Chumby website will let you sign up for updates into the autumn and those who do will be the first to get it.
