Got $500 (£250) to spare and want an electric car? Why not put it down as a - fully refundable - deposit on an Aptera? Okay, so you'll need to shell out at least another $26,400 (£13,200) to complete the purchase, but you won't be seeing the completed car for another year, so you can get saving now.

It's a two-plus-one seater number, which can allegedly achieve top speeds of 95 mph and 0-60mph in 10 seconds. Safety and entertainment features include airbags, rear view camera, GPS and a media player, with solar-assisted climate control using the solar panels set into the roof.

You can opt to go with a fully electric model powered solely on batteries. This should see you through 120 miles on a few hours' charge, or you can go for a fully loaded Plug-in Series Hybrid at $29,900 (work it out, go on) which is assisted by a gasoline generator substantially extending the driving time. Aptera is also claiming this engine can achieve 300 mpg, but given the way Toyota had to eat its words over the Prius's considerably more conservative mpg estimate, I'd be surprised, even with the full might of the electric drive train being used.
