The Wind-up bedside lamp is not only charmingly retro-simple, it's also a self-contained system. A turn of the key winds up the steel spring inside, which provides juice to the capacitor inside, which makes the lamp light up. When it runs out of power, it turns off. While mostly intended to provide temporary light to those who like to read until they pass out peacefully, but don't want to sleep with the light on all night, it could also be a great option in spaces that tend to only need light briefly, like closets and lavatories. (Though in the latter cause, force majeure could result in your being stuck in darkness, so locate close to hand - and wash up after.) [Camille]
