It's like the heady days of the early 19th century: before there were gadgets, there was big business trying to monopolize resources and charge consumers through the nose. Like we did then, Americans ain't havin' it. In a federal lawsuit filed last week, it's alleged that cable companies constitute a cartel and are screwing cable TV subscribers by selling pre-determined channel packages. If the suit gains class action status, bigwigs such as Time Warner, Viacom, Comcast, and Disney would have to offer subscribers cable channels individually.
I've resisted subscribing to cable. The packages that Sky offers here in the UK always have at least one channel I wouldn't pay someone else to watch (e.g. anything to do with children or sports). Power to the people on this lawsuit and then let's hope the movement for a la carte cable spreads across the Pond. Pay-per-view may become pay-per-channel and not a moment too soon.
