Is the iPhone actually going to get bought in the UK?

I'm a massive geek, and I fell in love with the iPhone when I saw it on Tuesday. In fact, I declared that I would Definitely, Absolutely be buying one as soon as I had the chance. And then I went home and had a little think, and decided that it was too expensive, didn't have sufficient storage, and wasn't email-friendly enough, and I wouldn't be buying one.

And it turns out, you think the same. Our poll on Tuesday asked whether you'd be shelling out for one, and the results were surprising. 57% of you think that the phone has been over-hyped, and will never be buying it, and only 12% of you look like you're actually going to even look into getting one.

When the dust settles, will the lack of 3G, the commitment to one network and the overall cost be enough to deter all but the hardcore Apple fanpeeps from getting an iPhone?

I'm still not clear on why anyone would particularly want an iPhone. I mean, its pretty and all, but whats so unique about it?

The user interface is unique and I thought the UK version would be 3G and after the iPod touch announcement that there would be a 16GB version.

As it is we have phones here that are 3G with better cameras, open API for extra third party apps like Skype and GPS.

I really want that nice UI but I'll have to wait until it catches up with what the rest feature wise.

Too expensive for someone on a next-to-nothing college student budget. :(
But it is pretty.

Ta for the precis, Damian.
I break every touchscreen thing I use, so thats more in the nature of a disincentive to buy an iPhone! Still very pretty though.

The hand set is the sexiest thing on the planet and I, for one, would shell out my hard earned £269. It's the price plans that are the sour pill for me. In the light of the announcement on Tuesday of free data on all O2 contracts from Oct 1st, £35 for 200 talk mins and 200 txts is a rip off. Consider, you buy an unlocked handset on ebay and pop in one of O2s very own simplicity sim cards and for £20 you can get 400 mins talk time and 1000 txts. pay an extra £5 for Long weekends and talk and txt are unlimited Sat, Sun and Mon. How cool is that.
