IFA 07: Sony Blu-ray players

Sony's love affair with Blu-ray continues, and although the main press conference focussed on launching the new Walkman range, the word "Blu-ray" was, like "HD", never far from each speaker's lips.

Two new Blu-ray players, one "priced for wide appeal" and the other a more high-end number, have also been launched here in Germany this week. The lower-priced BDP-S300 and its high-end brother, the BDP-S500, will both come with a free copy of the Spider-Man Trilogy on Blu-ray when they hit the shops in a month or so (no prices yet). Spec includes HDMI output, 7.1 channel surround sound, 24p True Camera (which delivers picture and sound as the director intended), Bravia Theatre Sync and wide format compatibility. There are some extra Dolby TrueHD audio features and a motorised sliding panel on the BDP-S500 to give it more luxury appeal.
