A lightweight handbag sized camera is all right for a night in the pub, but a quick look at other people's pictures on Flickr will quickly bring on Photographer's Envy and have you reaching for the D-SLR camera catalogue. Canon have your back, with two of their new SLR cameras.

The first, the EOS 40D, is aimed at high class amateurs, featuring specs that are often found on professional cameras. It shoots 6.5 photos every second, and has a start up time of 0.15 seconds, so you won't miss shots. It's got 10.1 megapixels and, unlike many professional cameras, has a 'live' LCD screen, rather than you always having to look through the viewfinder. It's going to be available in September, although no word on pricing yet.

The second, the EOS 1Ds Mark III is for the serious pros. It sports 21 megapixels, and shoots 5 frames a second at that resolution - the best in the business. Like its predecessor, it also has 63-zone exposure metering, 19 cross-type auto focus system, a 3.0” LCD with Live View mode and EOS Integrated Cleaning System. Big, serious stuff. It'll be available in October for £5999.99.
