Alcatel's £8 throw-away handset - is it right?

e201.jpg
There's nothing staggering about the specification of Alcatel's E201 handset - colour screen, polyphonic ringtones, handsfree kit - but what is surprising is the price. It's been dropped from an already low £15 to a ridiculously low £8. Whilst on the one hand this is great news for those on a serious budget, it doesn't bode well for the environment. There's already landfills getting filled to the brim with unwanted mobile phones, as we all take advantage of our contract upgrades and don't bother recycling our old phones. At £8, your mobile phone becomes a disposable item, like lighters, biros and knickers (at least if you're Victoria Beckham). It's not good. However, if you want to ignore all my pleas (and be singly handedly responsible for melting the ice caps, and for polar bears drowning, and for all this crappy weather) you can get yours at Woolworths. Take a look at Hippyshopper for more environmental inspiration.
