Toshiba Portégé R500 world's lightest laptop (for now)

That's the single-spindle variety, at a feather-light 799g, although I don't expect the dual-spindle model, with a tiny 7mm optical drive, will be any more of a burden. This sleek, silver, superslim laptop aims to pack in some impressive technology under its 12.1" hood too, as the specs show.

For example, Toshiba tell us it is their first laptop to feature a Flash-based 64GB Solid State Disc (SSD). SSDs have the advantages of being more resilient to shock and vibration, more energy efficient, quieter and with faster boot-up and read times and will be launched in August 2007. Intel® Centrino™ Duo Processor technology is at the core, with WiFi, 1024MB of RAM and a choice of 120GB or 160GB hard drive. Windows Vista Premium Edition is the OS of choice.; the notebook is available in July 2007 from £1,099 (excl. VAT), but we'll hopefully be getting our hands on one in advance to show you the fine details.
