Wasn’t there a survey done years ago where the most uniformly understood word in the world was ‘okay’ and the second-most was Coca-Cola? Maybe that was just Coke’s ad campaign, but there’s something along those lines floating around in my consciousness. I imagine by now Coca-Cola must have been overtaken by something more Noughties like ‘iPod’ or ‘Nokia’ or something, and in a bid to renew their world domination, here they are with a social networking site for teens, for mobiles.
Coke are launching the site – merrily named the Sprite Yard – as a teen social networking forum designed to be used from a mobile phone, with an interface that’s easier to work with on your mobile screen than the likes of MySpace. As well as being of course a very generous and socially responsible act, it’s a marketing ploy for Sprite because, well, buying Sprite is the only way to get in.
Under a Sprite bottle top is a secret entry code, which, when sent to the Sprite Yard, returns a URL that leads to a sign-up page. Sound complicated? For Generation Y teens, it’s as easy as watching TV. So once you’ve bought your Sprite and got in, what’s to stop you never buying one again? Ahh, you see Sprite bottles will also carry codes for free downloads of exclusive Sprite Yard content such as visitones and mobisodes, things you really have to be Generation Y to even hope to understand. Launched already in China, it’s due to begin this month in the US.

I am not sure if you even have been to the site or used it at all because let me break this news to you that You dont need to buy a Sprite at all to go into the Yard or register. Its completely free. You just need to go to www.spriteyard.mobi and it will tell you a number to text to get the link to register on The Yard, as simple as that. You may need to buy sprite if you want to download free content but thats just a tiny part of the Site. The major advantage is its ability to allow users to share information, pictures, send messages to each other, post comments and pictures on each others message board and invite friends to join or to their events. And of course this is all free of charge. You would probably pay a few cents in data charges if you dont have a data package with your current tariff, which is alot cheaper than sending an sms message.
Its like having a mini my space on the mobile just a lot better, fun and easier than that.
