In the wake of US lawsuits, coffee makers are having to cover their backs with this new heat-indicating, seal-indicating coffee cup lid. At least, Smart Lid Systems are hoping so.
The company have produced a regular plastic coffee cup lid with a difference – a food-grade compliant, colour-changing additive in the lid turns it from brown to red if the drink is too hot, and shows a continuous brown line around the lid if it’s sealed and a broken one if it’s not sealed properly. For coffee retailers, that means customers can’t blame them if they get scalded by taking a premature sip, while for we coffee drinkers, it means we don’t have to risk that first sip until we know it’s safe to do so. Well, thank goodness for that!
