Slinky Speaker from Boston Acoustics hides in the ceiling

Speakers. They’re not naturally pretty, are they? So for a long while now, we’ve been trying to make them pretty, or at the very least, stylish. Then there’s the other, rather male extreme, of making your speakers as big and black and chunky as possible, displaying their subwoofing glory with exaggerated cones and curves, but that’s not really my taste. Boston Acoustics have another approach with their DSi range: Stick ‘em in the ceiling – make them practically invisible!

The DSi455T2, for example, is a single speaker offering stereo hi-fi playback, with home cinema rear and side speakers, all in one unit. With a shallow mounting depth of 10.8cm, it’s designed to mount into British ceilings and lie flush without interfering with whatever else is up there. Its svelteness belies its contents – two silk dome tweeters and a dual voice core woofer, giving a sturdy range of sound dispersed to the maximum through precision designed cones and grilles. And what’s more, with a white finish and a paintable surround, if you change your mind about the invisible speaker concept, you could always splash a bit of shocking pink on it and call it a feature.
