I am emotionally stunted. I would rather not discuss my inner most feelings with you. In fact, I don't want you to get involved. Luckily, this is 2007, and I can let you know exactly what's going on in my life, without ever having to actually *talk* about it.
Welcome to the world of status updates.
When I get in in the morning, I have to find 3 different ways of describing how I'm feeling. And they've all got to be witty and yet informative.
First up, Twitter. This can refer to my immediate situation, since in theory, I should be updating it a few times a day. Most of my morning updates refer to my commute, my hangover or last night's telly. But Twitter is popular, and I'm competing with some *really funny* people. I usually log off this feeling inadequate and jaded.
Next, Facebook. This is checked by people I haven't seen since playgroup, so the main theme here is success. Whatever the update - my dog died, I had a fight with my best friend, I've accidentally put my t-shirt on inside out - the overlying message has to be one of Profound Happiness With My Lot In Life.
Finally, Skype. This one is all about the themes. Since all of Shiny Towers is constantly IM-ing each other through Skype, our updates inevitably all echo each others. So far this week, we have all been all been about bringing things back - so far we have all brought musty/legwarmers/single/early 90s Jerry Seinfeld looks back.
Personally, I was bringing single back, which (in a terribly satisfying circulatory way) brings me right back to the beginning. Thanks to my status updates, at no point did I have to have the "Oh, we broke up" conversation. I could go right on being emotionally stunted, enjoying my melancholy without having to share. Think of how this could work out in the future: you could inform people of engagements, marriages, subsequent divorces - all through the medium of status updates. I've already seen the word on births being spread through text messaging. Just wait til I inform my parents on their first grandchild via Facebook.
Susi Weaser is fine, thanks for asking. And she asks that you bear with the headshot - she's overexcited about the fact that she had a Shiny Towers photo session the other day.
