Shiny Review: Intempo Digital PG-02 DAB Radio Alarm

intempo-dab-pg02.jpgThe Intempo PG-02 is a traditionally styled DAB and FM radio alarm. A follow up to the wood-effect PG-01 it aims to have retro appeal with up to date technology. This it manages, for the most part, being a decent radio even if the design is a tad mumsy.

The retro appeal is limited. The silver-effect case is rather cumbersome, the sole concession to elegant styling being a crystalline diamond on the front. The central tuning knob is actually the volume control and it feels rather tacky and plasticky to the touch. Having said that, control and navigation is a doddle with clearly marked buttons. Surf up or down and select to confirm, or autotune.

Sound quality is reasonably good. It was being tested in an area with generally poor reception, but most stations were available on DAB, and sounded good. The FM radio was of a respectable quality with the aid of the traditional tucked-away aerial.

The tiny blue backlit display shows station name and genre, date and time and there are four presets that can be tuned in.

The PG-02 is quite a solid, heavy radio, but it's not really designed to be portable despite the integrated handle. It does pretty much exactly what it says on the tin, and reasonably well, too. It's rare to see a gadget that only does one thing (I found myself absent-mindedly looking for the iPod dock) but a pleasure too. A suitable economical option, it looks to be available for around £59.99.
