MS Popfly Creator is a new set of online tools for creating mashups, linked to a community, Popfly Space, in which you can share your creations, comment on others and even borrow from each other for yet more mashup mayhem.
Using tutorials, fully customisable HTML, Silverlight and more you can create a mashup, create an online space and embed your work in popular blogging formats like Typepad. At the moment MS are ranking this a "Private Alpha" but you can sign up for the waiting list and be among the first wave to try out the tools and tips Popfly has to offer.
For those who are a little confused as to what constitues a mashup, Microsoft helpfully explain that it's a merging of data from two (or more sites) into one which can then be embedded into blogs and so forth. A blog has even started tracking the myriad Google Maps-related mashups.
The Popfly site currently offers an overview of the service, with screenshots and brief explanations as well as a set of FAQs. My favourite question?
Q: Why did you call it Popfly?
A: Well, left to our own devices we would have called "Microsoft Visual Mashup Creator Express, May 2007 Community Tech Preview Internet Edition," but instead we asked some folks for help and they suggested some cool names and we all liked Popfly.
Honesty from Microsoft. Ever a Good Thing.
