Ireland's Education Department is concerned that their students' love of text messaging is to blame for their poor spelling. According to the report, "Text messaging, with its use of phonetic spelling and little or no punctuation, seems to pose a threat to traditional conventions in writing." Apparently the students' vocabulary is now "limited" and is "unduly reliant on short sentences and simple tenses". On school exams the students apparently chose to "answer sparingly, even minimally, rather than seeing questions as invitations to explore the territory they had studied and to express the breadth and depth of their learning and understanding". While I can see their point, I feel that Ireland could easily fix this problem by adding a "predictive answering" service to their exams. That way, everybody wins!
