Acer are hopping up and down with toilet-needing excitement over their two new Santa Rosa ranges, the Aspire Gemstone consumer-focussed brand and the TravelMate business solution.
The Gemstone gets the majority of Acer's attention (as Katie's report from Milan showed us), with its focus on UI, ergonomics and consumer-friendly design. It's a simple piano black glossy pebble in appearance, with eye-friendly grey innards including shortcut buttons for common tasks and the "Empowering Technology" button which launches a helpful on-screen toolbar. A quick demonstration of the power of the Gemstone linked up to a Dolby AV home receiver underscored Acer's insistence that this can be the heart of the home entertainment system. By comparison, the TravelMate seems almost like a poor ignored second cousin...
...and yet it too, is laden with Intel's new technology, with some models bearing the extra security of the new Centrino Pro. Fingerprint security, simple, sober business styling and quiet efficiency are the hallmarks of this lighter, more portable model series.
