3D printing puts the postman out of a job

This is one of those frightening moments when you realise the future is here. Desktop Factory have made, for a mere $300, a 3D printer. That’s not a printer that exists in three dimensions – it’s a printer that *prints* in three dimensions! You can print a rubber duck, then take it out and hold it in your hand! I think it might even squeak!

These have existed before, in the realms of enormous design companies, but they’ve always been prohibitively expensive. Now at $300, small businesses, engineers, even students can have them. Before long, we’ll all have them in our homes. We’ll be able to order online from Argos and we won’t have to wait patiently for the postman – we’ll just print out that new DVD player we ordered. Although with the current designs, we could only print something like a mug , developer Professor Lipson said, “Researchers … have preliminary designs for batteries, sensors, and parts that can bend when electricity is applied. A milestone for us would be to print a robot that would get up and walk out of the printer.” So it won’t be long before our whole house can come out of the printer!
