And no, I don't mean that it goes into energy-saving mode at the precise moment you want to take a picture. As more of our favourite gadgets become multi-functional (I’m fully expecting the iPhone to tie my shoelaces), it seems incredible that the DXG-521 aka Roadster is the first digital camera to also play games.
Snap 5 megapixel images, then flip the screen over to play one of the 20 built-in 2D and 3D games, which include Tetris, Boxman and Gobang. Not enough? Shoot MPEG 4 videos at a respectable 640 x 480 resolution, too.
But wait! There’s more.
It’s no wonder DXG tout this as an all-in-one personal media centre, because there’s no doubt that it’s feature packed.
Plug the Roadster into your TV or DVD player to directly record video; you can save it onto the SD card if you like. And these days almost no device is complete without being an MP3 player, so DXG have thrown that in as well, after which the digital voice recording is very small fry indeed.
My first instinct towards products like this is that they’re overcomplicated and, with some exceptions, devices ought to do what they say on their tin and not everyone else’s. But at just $199.99 and kid-friendly, this device could be the answer to a parent’s prayer when they see what the bill for several separate gadgets could amount to.
